Mt. Bonnell Triptych #DebbiSmithRourke #LakeAustin

Mt. Bonnell Triptych
Oil on canvas - Three 20"x20" works
Painted gallery-wrapped edges
NFS

I painted this about 2.5 years ago and never posted it. After getting a new headboard, I needed new artwork. So, I painted the view as if we had a window over the bed and no house next door. :-) Living near Lake Austin has it's perks as you can see it out the adjacent window. This image depicts the morning view with the light not quite yet over the trees as they are still in shadow. And I removed buildings to keep it pastoral. The white trim indicates a window frame. Not sure that reads as such but still makes a nice border. Could be a frame. Anyway, I love it and it really makes the room.

I'm having fun imagining my paintings in lovely interior settings. Which is your favorite? More to come! These two paintings are both abstracted views of Lake Austin. Teal Hills is a spring view and West Austin View is an early December view. They work as a pair or hung individually. - Update: sold as a pair. So grateful to have wonderful collectors!!!

Early Morn Lake View / Vertical © #commission #LakeAustin #360bridge

©2014 Debbi Smith Rourke
Early Morn Lake View / Vertical 40"x30"
Oil on unstretched canvas
Commissioned / SOLD

Last Saturday, I put the final touches on this commissioned work for a client in Ohio. She has an Austin connection and loves this view. Her interior designer is also my dear friend Kay Rasoletti. Gotta love that! They were keen on teal and burgundy colors and requested a vertical version of a prior painting of mine. The requested size was large, 40x30" plus 1.5" on each side to cover a gallery-wrapped canvas. And it had to be shipped, so I worked on loose canvas so it could be rolled and shipped in a tube. I learned many things in the process, so I thought I would share the stages. It was challenging trying to get a good photograph in my studio. I wasn't able to get a good photograph until it was finished and dry and I could carry it outside to shoot in natural light. So pardon the quality of my process photos.
I bought unstretched canvas and cut a size larger than my 43x33 needs, stapled it to a plywood board and created registration marks for the surface size (40"x30") and the full size.

I added three coats of gesso.

Next, I put in the darks and established the basic layout, and established the lighter areas.

I added detail, mid-tone values, texture in layers, put burgundy glazes over the lower, dark hills and softened the sky.

Preparing to roll, put in a tube and ship!

You can get a sense of the scale when you notice the legs of my office chairs in the background.

In a tube and on its way to Ohio!!

Teal Hills © / In-Home Studio Holiday Sale

Teal Hills 24"x 24"

I am enjoying painting abstracted landscape imagery, particularly of Lake Austin. Unexpected surprises arise when I explore techniques such as multiple layers, interesting new color mixes and a variety of textures.

This Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14th, I am hosting a Holiday Art Sale in my home and home studio. Email, text or FB message me for my address. The inside of our home is decked out for the season and my paintings are hanging throughout the house — an homage to myself! If you are in Austin, pop by!

I love painting Lake Austin. This scene looking toward downtown and over Mt. Bonnell is a favorite of mine. I also love simplifying shapes and forms and consider this an abstracted landscape. Hope you enjoy.

Windy Point   18x36"
Oil on 1.5" wide gallery-wrapped canvas
SOLD

I painted this last weekend and am finally posting it. You can click on it to make it larger. I just love this view of Lake Austin and Mt. Bonnell looking toward DT Austin from Cat Mountain. When it came time to name it, this name just popped into my mind. It does indeed get windy at this spot. This is one of my new works (after attending the Sandy Ostrau workshop in Berkley last month) that will be on display in the sixth street Scarborough Building lobby in March, and possibly West Austin Studio Tour. News to follow. All good!! Yay!!

I've painted this winter scene of Lake Austin before. This time, I used my new abstracted approach working with just a palette knife. Very interesting editing out what seems unimportant and focusing simply on shape, color, composition and value. So much fun!!!

Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas
ORIGINAL SOLD
Canvas prints available from 8x10" to 24x30"

I delivered this painting last weekend to my friend Julie Pastor. She is on the committee for Kealing Middle's Schools fundraiser: Kealing Center Stage. They will be raising money tonight to help save vital programs, including art programs, threatened by budget cuts.

This is the second painting I have created from one of my favorite moody photographs taken of Lake Austin near the Pennybacker (360) bridge. The morning sunlight makes the lake and the land across the lake glisten while the foreground has yet to be graced by the day's direct light. I love watching the colors change throughout the day and the seasons along Lake Austin.

Recently, this painting I sold to some dear friends (who live half the year in Austin and half the year in Indiana) has gained additional interest. So I am offering it as a 24 x 24 x .75" gallery-wrapped canvas print. It's one of my favorite spots in Austin and I painted it on a lovely day with several fellow plein air painters. All good things!!!!

Mid-December Morning / 360° of Lake Austin Series

© Debbi Smith Rourke
Mid-December Morning  8x10"
Oil on canvas board framed in black plein air frame.
SOLD
I painted this last Friday, New Year's Eve, but am finally getting it posted today on Jan. 3rd. This painting was inspired from a photo I took in early/mid December. The bright, red leaves on the tree popping out from the oaks have now dropped and blown away. Can't wait to paint this larger.

Deck View #3

© Debbi Smith Rourke
Deck View #3  8x10"
 Oil on 8x10" canvas. Framed size 12.5 x 14.5"
$150 framed + tax (TX only) + $15 shipping.
Did this small study this morning from a photo taken from my deck. I have so many photos of our views as each day I am convinced I am looking at a uniquely beautiful setting. Time of day and seasons are so fun to watch. This kind of high key painting is new to me but I really like it. Larger version to come soon. Want to keep the large one simplified so think it is best to start small to find the essential elements. ...Oh yeah, always appreciate your support, feedback and sweet comments!!!!!
